KATHMANDU, April 15 (2083 B.S.) — High-level discussions were held today at the Ministry of Home Affairs to strengthen bilateral relations and expand cooperation in infrastructure development and disaster safety between Nepal and Japan.
During a courtesy call, Honorable Home Minister Sudhan Gurung and His Excellency Maeda Toru, Ambassador of Japan to Nepal, deliberated on ongoing development projects and strategic partnerships.
Key Highlights:
• Proposal for Disaster Management University: Minister Gurung proposed the establishment of a specialized Disaster Management University in Nepal for advanced study and research. He highlighted the need for Japan’s technical expertise and knowledge transfer to help Nepal manage its geographical vulnerabilities more effectively.
• Nagdhunga Tunnel and Infrastructure: The meeting reviewed the progress of the Nagdhunga Tunnel Project and other infrastructure initiatives supported by Japan. The Home Minister emphasized that such projects are vital contributors to Nepal’s overall development goals.
• Welfare of Nepali Citizens: Minister Gurung expressed gratitude for Japan’s positive policies regarding education and employment opportunities for Nepali citizens. In response, Ambassador Toru praised the contributions of Nepalis to Japanese society and reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to making Nepal-Japan migration cooperation more organized and robust.
• Tourism and Strategic Partnership: Discussions also focused on promoting the tourism sector as a pillar of bilateral cooperation. Minister Gurung stressed the importance of a strategic partnership to promote the sustainable development of the Lumbini region and showcase Nepal’s natural and cultural heritage globally.
Ambassador Toru congratulated Minister Gurung on his successful tenure and expressed Japan’s continued commitment to deepening the historical and friendly ties between the two nations.
