Australian security agencies have been placed on high alert after a death threat targeting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi surfaced on social media ahead of his upcoming visit to Australia.
According to The Australia Today, the threat was posted in the comments section of a Facebook post promoting the "Melbourne Meets Modi" event, scheduled to take place on July 9 at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne.
The comment, posted from a Facebook account under the name "Abu Mustafa," read: "It would be better to keep the stadium roof closed during the event, otherwise he (Modi) is coming to Australia for his death."
Following the incident, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and other security agencies launched an investigation. Security sources said authorities have traced the IP address linked to the Facebook account and are working to identify the individual or group responsible for the threat.
An AFP spokesperson said threats against visiting foreign leaders are treated with the utmost seriousness and confirmed that security arrangements for the visit are being thoroughly reviewed. No arrests have been made so far.
Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to visit Australia from July 8 to 10 at the invitation of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to attend the annual Australia–India Leaders' Summit.
During the visit, the two leaders are expected to discuss strategic partnership, trade, security, defence cooperation, and other bilateral issues, with several key agreements likely to be signed.
In response to the threat, security has been significantly tightened at venues in Melbourne, Sydney, and other locations where Prime Minister Modi is expected to attend official events. Multiple security agencies have also been placed on heightened alert.
