A massive landslide triggered by continuous heavy rainfall struck India's Jammu and Kashmir region on Monday, burying dozens of vehicles near the under-construction 540 MW Kwar Hydropower Project in Kishtwar district.
According to local authorities, the landslide and flash floods hit the project site following intense rainfall, engulfing several trucks, dumpers and other heavy vehicles parked near the construction area. Emergency teams and heavy machinery have been deployed to clear debris and recover the buried vehicles.
The landslide also blocked a section of the Doda–Kishtwar National Highway (NH-244), disrupting traffic in the region. Road clearance operations began immediately, and officials later restored one-way traffic on parts of the highway.
No casualties have been officially confirmed so far. However, authorities believe the incident caused significant damage to vehicles and infrastructure associated with the hydropower project. A detailed assessment of the losses is underway.
The India Meteorological Department has warned that heavy rainfall is expected to continue across parts of Jammu and Kashmir, increasing the risk of further landslides and flash floods. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and remain alert until weather conditions improve.
